How to itemise Novaria and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Novaria

Novaria thrives on ultra-long-range sniping and vision control, but her damage relies heavily on scaling her high-scaling skills like Astral Recall and Astral Meteor. Without sufficient magic power and penetration, her poke lacks lethal potential and leaves her ineffective during mid-game standoffs. This build focuses on maximizing her single-hit burst potential and magic power while complementing her long-range artillery playstyle. By backing up her ultimate Astral Echo and high-distance Astral Recall hits with massive magic scaling and defense penetration, Novaria can delete squishy targets from beyond screen range. Extra mobility and shield protection ensure she remains untouched while navigating terrain.

Arcane Boots

Early

Early magic penetration allows Novaria to instantly boost the damage output of Astral Meteor during early lane trades. The extra movement speed aids her in roaming between lanes while combining with the terrain-passing movement boost of Astral Recall. This ensures she can position herself behind walls safely, vision-control key choke points near the Turtle, and land long-range snipes before enemies purchase any early magic defense.

Building max HP and magic power over time gives Novaria the foundation required for sustained poking. Because Astral Recall requires her to move into position and throw projectiles constantly, the extra durability and expanding resource pool prevent her from running out of momentum during long standoffs. Scaling her total magic power early directly enhances the maximum distance-based damage amplifier of her primary sniping ability.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Time: Gains 20 extra Max HP and 4 extra Magic Power every 20s, capped at 15 stacks.

This item amplifies Novaria's single-hit burst damage dramatically. When her skill damage connects, the splash damage passive triggers based on her total magic power, turning every successful long-distance Astral Recall into a multi-target burst. Additionally, the temporary movement speed boost helps Novaria reposition after firing her sphere, allowing her to escape safely back behind walls or set up her next spell rotation effortlessly.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Resonate: Every 6s, the next skill that deals damage will resonate, dealing Magic Damage equal to 120% Magic Power against up to 3 enemies and increasing Movement Speed by 30% that decays over 2s.

Novaria's Astral Meteor deals damage continuously over time before exploding, which rapidly shreds enemy magic defense stacks. This makes Genius Wand the perfect follow-up item. Enemies trapped in Astral Meteor or tagged by Astral Echo will take significantly boosted follow-up damage from a fully charged Astral Recall snipe, making her poke lethally effective against grouped enemy teams contesting map objectives like the Lord.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Magic: Dealing Magic Damage to enemy heroes will reduce their Magic Defense by 3-7 (scales with level) for 2s. Stacks up to 3 times.

As enemies build magic defense in the late game to survive her artillery, Divine Glaive ensures her damage remains deadly. Its passive grants percentage-based magic penetration that scales higher against high magic defense targets. Combined with the enlarged hitboxes applied by Astral Echo, Novaria can pierce through bulky frontline tanks and deal devastating percentage-HP damage with both Astral Meteor and Star Shatter from complete safety.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Spellbreaker: When attacking an enemy, gains 0.1% extra Magic Penetration for each point of the enemy's Magic Defense, capped at 20%.

In the late game, positioning mistakes can prove fatal. Blood Wings grants immense raw magic power to push the damage of Astral Recall to its absolute limit, while its shield passive provides crucial protection against dive threats. The movement speed granted while the shield is active enhances her terrain navigation during Astral Recall, making Novaria nearly impossible to catch when casting spells from behind thick walls.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Guard: Gains a shield equal to 200% of Magic Power. The shield will regenerate 20s after being damaged, and grants 30 Movement Speed while it lasts.

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When facing frontline tanks stacking high magic defense early

Prioritize building Divine Glaive right after Lightning Truncheon, delaying Genius Wand. Because Divine Glaive scales penetration against high defense values, it counters enemy tanks trying to block her long-range Astral Recall shots, allowing her percentage-HP damage on Astral Meteor to melt heavy targets faster during early objective contests around the Turtle.

When targeted by aggressive backline flankers and assassins

Build Blood Wings earlier right after Genius Wand instead of delaying it for the final slot. The massive magic power boost continues to strengthen her Astral Recall snipes, while the immediate shield and extra movement speed complement her phase-through-wall mobility from Astral Recall, allowing her to survive dive attempts and escape.
