How to itemise Ling and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Ling

Ling relies on high mobility and critical strikes, but his passive Cloud Walker modifies his critical damage and scales heavily off critical chance. Because Defiant Sword is treated as a Basic Attack that can deal critical hits and trigger attack effects, this build focuses on converting critical chance into guaranteed burst damage while maintaining smooth energy management. By combining early attack speed, critical chance multipliers, and True Damage procs, this build enhances Ling's ability to quickly burst down squishy targets during Tempest of Blades. The build overcomes Ling's vulnerability when grounded and amplifies his wall-hopping maneuverability provided by Finch Poise.

Item by item

Flame Hunter's Magic Boots

Early

Flame Hunter's Magic Boots provides vital early cooldown reduction and faster creep clearing. Cooldown reduction allows Ling to cast Finch Poise more frequently to traverse walls and execute extra Defiant Sword stabs. The true damage against creeps helps secure the early Turtle, accelerating Ling toward his critical item spikes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Hunter: After dealing damage to a Creep, deal 25<2|lv 3> + True Damage to the target over 3s (damage is increased by 100% for non-Marksmen heroes).

Windtalker

Core

Windtalker boosts movement speed and attack speed while supplying critical chance that Cloud Walker multiplies. The high attack speed smooths out the animation of Defiant Sword, allowing Ling to rapidly collect swords generated by Tempest of Blades. The Typhoon passive also deals extra magic damage that can crit, improving Ling's early clear and burst.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Typhoon: Every 5-2s (reduced by 0.2s for each Basic Attack), the next Basic Attack will hit up to 3 enemy units for 150-362 Magic Damage. (This attack can Crit and the damage increases to 200% against Minions.)

Berserker's Fury serves as Ling's primary power spike. Because Cloud Walker and Finch Poise boost critical chance, this item guarantees almost every Defiant Sword will land a critical hit. Critical stabs apply an enhanced slow onto targets and grant extra physical attack, turning Tempest of Blades sword collections into a devastating lethal combination.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Doom: Critical strikes grant 5% extra Physical Attack for 2s.

Endless Battle synergizes with Defiant Sword because the skill counts as a Basic Attack, instantly triggering the extra True Damage proc upon landing. During Tempest of Blades, resetting Defiant Sword four times in quick succession lets Ling deal massive continuous True Damage while restoring health to sustain through extended skirmishes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Divine Justice: After casting a skill, the next Basic Attack within 3s deals 60% Physical Attack as extra True Damage (1.5s cooldown).

Blade of Despair turns Ling into an unstoppable late-game assassin by maximizing physical attack. When Ling lands Tempest of Blades on enemies or stabs them below half health with Defiant Sword, the extra physical attack kicks in immediately, ensuring squishy heroes are finished off before they can react.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Immortality

Situational

Immortality offers crucial late-game insurance. If Ling gets controlled while jumping from walls via Finch Poise or gets focused down inside his Sword Field, the resurrection grants a shield and extra chance to reset Defiant Sword or leap away to nearby walls safely.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When snowballing hard in the early game

Prioritize building Berserker's Fury immediately after Flame Hunter's Magic Boots before Windtalker. Accelerating critical chance triggers Cloud Walker earlier, allowing Defiant Sword to deal massive burst damage and snowball the match before enemies purchase defense.

When enemy locks you down with heavy focus fire

Delay Blade of Despair and buy Immortality earlier after completing Endless Battle. The revive shield prevents complete shutdown if you get interrupted while leaping from walls with Finch Poise, giving you time to cast Tempest of Blades and disengage.
