How to itemise Esmeralda and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Esmeralda

Esmeralda thrives in sustained melee combat by continuously spamming Stardust Dance to reduce the cooldown of Frostmoon Shield, allowing her to absorb enemy shields and stack her own durability. However, this high-frequency skill rotation severely strains her Mana pool and leaves her reliant on high Magic Power to make her shield absorption and dual-type damage effective. This build solves her resource bottleneck while scaling her offensive and defensive capabilities together. By prioritizing Mana regeneration early and stacking Magic Power alongside basic attack enhancements, Esmeralda evolves from a Mana-hungry skirmisher into an unkillable frontline bruiser who constantly converts enemy defenses into her own shields.

Arcane Boots

Early

Arcane Boots provide early Magic Penetration that amplifies the damage dealt by Stardust Dance and Frostmoon Shield. Since her passive Starmoon Casket relies on dealing Magic Damage to convert shields and deal damage, early penetration allows her to win trades in the Mid Lane, clear minion waves efficiently, and establish immediate pressure against rival laners.

Enchanted Talisman addresses Esmeralda's intense Mana consumption. Her core combat loop requires relentless spamming of Stardust Dance to refresh Frostmoon Shield. The Mana Spring passive ensures she maintains a stable Mana supply during prolonged engagements, enabling non-stop skill rotations during team fights and objective contests like the Turtle without running out of resources.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mana Spring: Regenerates 15% Max Mana every 10s.

Feather of Heaven synergizes perfectly with Starmoon Casket by adding extra Magic Damage to Esmeralda's basic attacks based on her Magic Power. Because she frequently weaves basic attacks between skill casts to maximize her damage output, this item significantly increases her sustained DPS while keeping her closely attached to targets during skirmishes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Affliction: Basic Attacks deal extra Magic Damage equal to 50 plus 30% of the hero's Magic Power.

Starlium Scythe introduces the Crisis passive, converting skill casts into True Damage on her next basic attack while granting extra Movement Speed. Since Esmeralda continuously cycles Stardust Dance and Frostmoon Shield, she triggers this effect constantly, allowing her to melt tanky targets and stay mobile enough to sticky-chase fleeing backline heroes.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Crisis: Within 3s after casting a skill, the caster's next Basic Attack will deal additional True Damage equal to 100 plus 100% Magic Power and briefly grant 10% Movement Speed. This effect has a 1.5s cooldown.

Holy Crystal exponentially boosts Esmeralda's Magic Power through its Mystery passive. Every ability in her kit, particularly the shield gain from Frostmoon Shield and the dual damage of Falling Starmoon, scales directly with Magic Power. Completing this item dramatically increases both her survivability and damage output in late-game teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Mystery: Gains 21%-35% extra Magic Power (scales with level).

Blood Wings provides a massive boost to Magic Power along with the Guard passive shield. This protective shield stacks alongside her Frostmoon Shield and passive shield generation from Starmoon Casket, making Esmeralda nearly indestructible while granting bonus Movement Speed to help her initiate fights using Falling Starmoon.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Guard: Gains a shield equal to 200% of Magic Power. The shield will regenerate 20s after being damaged, and grants 30 Movement Speed while it lasts.

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When struggling with early Mana management and heavy enemy trades

Prioritize completing Enchanted Talisman before upgrading to full offensive options. Securing sustained Mana regeneration early allows you to spam Frostmoon Shield repeatedly to absorb incoming enemy damage while keeping your lane pushed.

When facing durable frontline compositions stacking defenses

Build Holy Crystal immediately after your initial core items to maximize raw Magic Power scaling. High Magic Power enhances both the damage output of Stardust Dance and the total shield generated from Frostmoon Shield, letting you out-sustain tanky opponents in long fights.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Esmeralda's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
