How to itemise Chou and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Chou

Chou relies heavily on weaving mobility and crowd control to isolate high-value targets using Jeet Kune Do and his ultimate, The Way of Dragon. However, his base damage relies on frequent skill casts and basic attacks, leaving him vulnerable during extended skirmishes if he lacks sustained burst and durability. This build solves his dual need for lethal burst damage and survivability in the EXP Lane. By combining skill-triggered True Damage with heavy Physical Attack and defensive utility, Chou maximizes the punch of his passive, Only Fast, while ensuring Shunpo gives him enough shield and immunity window to enter, eliminate a key target, and survive the retreat.

Build order

  3. 3 Blade of Despair
  4. 4 Brute Force Breastplate
  5. 5 Malefic Roar
  6. 6 Immortality

Item by item

Warrior Boots provides early physical defense during initial trades in the EXP Lane, mitigating damage as Chou aggressively positions with Jeet Kune Do. The passive stacking defense triggers when taking physical hits, granting extra protection while trading minion waves or dueling physical fighters. Acquiring this early ensures Chou stays healthy enough to look for early crowd control setups and control the lane before securing his core offensive items.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Valor: Gain 4 extra Physical Defense for 3s when taking Physical Damage, up to 20.

Endless Battle is Chou's essential core item because his combo involves spamming Jeet Kune Do and dashing with Shunpo. Casting these skills continuously empowers his subsequent basic attack with True Damage, seamlessly synergizing with his passive, Only Fast. This bonus allows Chou to deal massive single-target burst when knocking up targets or kicking them back with The Way of Dragon, transforming his utility setups into instant elimination opportunities.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Divine Justice: After casting a skill, the next Basic Attack within 3s deals 60% Physical Attack as extra True Damage (1.5s cooldown).

Blade of Despair dramatically inflates Chou's physical power, greatly boosting the shield gained from Shunpo and the physical scaling on The Way of Dragon. Its passive triggers when enemies drop below half health, applying an extra physical attack boost right before Chou delivers the second phase of his ultimate or enhanced passive strike. This item turns Chou from a setup fighter into a terrifying backline assassin capable of one-shotting squishy targets.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Despair: Dealing damage to non-Minion enemies below 50% HP increases Physical Attack by 25% for 2s (takes effect before the damage is dealt).

Brute Force Breastplate gives Chou the hybrid durability and mobility needed during mid-to-late game teamfights. Every skill cast from Jeet Kune Do and Shunpo rapidly stacks extra physical attack, movement speed, and eventual control duration reduction. This speed boost helps Chou maneuver around enemies to land the knockback from The Way of Dragon, while the added defense keeps him alive when diving deep into the enemy team.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Brute Force: Each second after dealing damage, gain 6 extra Physical Attack and Magic Power and 2% extra Movement Speed for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Gain 15% extra Control Duration Reduction at full stacks.

As enemy tankiness increases late in the game, Malefic Roar allows Chou to bypass heavy physical defense. This penetration amplifies the base physical damage of Jeet Kune Do and both hits of The Way of Dragon against armored targets. When combined with the bonus physical penetration granted by Shunpo, Chou maintains his ability to threaten tanks and bruisers, ensuring his burst combos remain lethal regardless of target defenses.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Armor Buster: When attacking an enemy, gains 0.125% extra Physical Penetration for each point of the enemy's Physical Defense, capped at 40%.

Immortality gives Chou a crucial second chance when executing risky playmaking kicks with The Way of Dragon deep behind enemy lines. If he gets focused after executing his combo, the revival passive brings him back to life with HP and a shield. This safety window allows his Shunpo cooldown to reset or allows him to use Jeet Kune Do to knock back chasers and escape safely.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

When facing physical lane opponents with high early poke

Prioritize finishing Warrior Boots immediately before building toward Endless Battle. The extra physical defense stacks from taking hits allow Chou to safely sustain through early trades while landing the third cast of Jeet Kune Do, ensuring he keeps lane pressure without risking death before reaching his primary damage power spikes.

When enemy targets start stacking heavy physical armor

Rush Malefic Roar right after Endless Battle instead of waiting until late game. The armor penetration passive works alongside the physical penetration granted after dashing with Shunpo, allowing Chou's ultimate, The Way of Dragon, to melt sturdy frontliners and heavily armored fighters who try to block his path.

When entering chaotic teamfights with high crowd control

Build Brute Force Breastplate earlier as your third item before Blade of Despair. Generating stacks via Jeet Kune Do grants movement speed and control duration reduction at maximum stacks, helping Chou complement the control immunity from Shunpo to execute his ultimate, The Way of Dragon, without getting permanently locked down by the enemy team.
