How to itemise Barats and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Barats

Barats thrives on maintaining maximum stacks of Big Guy, which enlarge Detona while granting bonus Hybrid Defense and Resilience. However, remaining in the fray requires immense durability, high extra Max HP scaling, and crowd control reduction to prevent getting kiteable. This build optimizes Barats around his HP-scaling abilities like So-Called Teamwork and the enhanced Trample Basic Attacks from Big Guy. By pairing True Damage slow effects with CDR and heavy defense, Barats can aggressively initiate engagements using Missile Expert and lock down high-value targets with Detona's Welcome without losing his stack duration or dying during prolonged frontline skirmishes.

Item by item

Warrior Boots provide essential early Physical Defense that stacks whenever Barats takes physical damage. During early-game laning or roaming, this armor complements the bonus Hybrid Defense gained from Big Guy stacks. The extra defense allows Barats to trade aggressive blows while hitting enemies with So-Called Teamwork, ensuring he can build up Detona's size safely without getting poked down before obtaining his core durability items.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Valor: Gain 4 extra Physical Defense for 3s when taking Physical Damage, up to 20.

Thunder Belt is indispensable for Barats because its True Damage scales directly with his extra HP. After dragging enemies in with Missile Expert or unleashing So-Called Teamwork, his next Basic Attack triggers a surrounding True Damage burst and a severe slow. This slow ensures enemies cannot escape Trample attacks while Big Guy is active, letting Barats effortlessly refresh his stack duration during chaotic teamfights.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Thunderbolt: After casting a skill, the next Basic Attack within 3s deals 50 plus 5% of the hero's extra HP as extra True Damage to the target and enemies around them and slows them by 40%-80% (scales with the hero's extra HP) for 1s (1.5s cooldown).

War Axe

Core

War Axe empowers Barats during sustained brawls by continuously increasing his physical offense and Spell Vamp as he deals damage. Since Detona frequently damages surrounding targets with So-Called Teamwork and Trample Basic Attacks, Barats rapidly fully stacks Fighting Spirit. The resulting bonus True Damage and sustain convert his high HP pool into a formidable threat, allowing him to overwhelm enemy frontlines while channeling Detona's Welcome safely.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Fighting Spirit: Dealing damage grants 12 extra Physical Attack and 2% extra Spell Vamp per second for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Deal 10% extra True Damage according to Base Damage at full stacks.####[C8This effect is reduced to 50% for Marksmen, Mages, and Supports.]

Brute Force Breastplate enhances Barats mobility and control resistance when casting skills continuously. Spamming So-Called Teamwork rapidly generates stacks, granting movement speed, extra offense, and Control Duration Reduction. Combined with the natural Resilience provided by Big Guy, Barats becomes nearly immune to enemy crowd control, ensuring he can easily chase down fleeing targets with Missile Expert and devour them with Detona's Welcome without being interrupted.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Brute Force: Each second after dealing damage, gain 6 extra Physical Attack and Magic Power and 2% extra Movement Speed for 4s, up to 6 stacks. Gain 15% extra Control Duration Reduction at full stacks.

Athena's Shield

Situational

Athena's Shield protects Barats from heavy burst Mages who attempt to burn down his massive health pool before he achieves full stacks of Big Guy. The instant Magic Damage Reduction triggers upon taking magic damage, mitigating high upfront burst. This protective buffer allows Barats to survive long magic skill combos, close the gap using Missile Expert, and suppress enemy threats with Detona's Welcome without risking sudden elimination.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Shield: Upon taking Magic Damage, gains 25% Magic Damage Reduction for 3s (applied before taking damage). Regains this effect 5s after leaving combat.

Guardian Helmet delivers a massive boost to Max HP, directly enhancing the bonus damage on So-Called Teamwork, Trample Basic Attacks, Detona's Welcome, and Thunder Belt. Furthermore, its continuous passive HP regeneration allows Barats to sustain through long teamfights or rapidly heal between skirmishes without resetting his Big Guy stacks at base, keeping him perpetually ready to contest objectives like the Turtle or Lord.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Recovery: Regenerates 2.5% Max HP per second (reduced to 0.5% Max HP per second over 5s after taking damage).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy magic burst teams

Prioritize completing Athena's Shield right after your core mobility items. This prevents high magic burst from melting Barats before he can build full stacks of Big Guy. Reducing incoming spell burst enables you to comfortably frontline, engage with Missile Expert, and execute Detona's Welcome without dying during the initial clash.

When physical damage dealers dominate

Rush Warrior Boots early and build Brute Force Breastplate immediately after your primary slow item. Stacking physical defense alongside the Hybrid Defense from Big Guy negates physical harassment. The added movement speed and control reduction help Barats stay glued to physical carries, continually refreshing Trample attacks to maintain full stack size.

When enemies lack burst magic

Delay Athena's Shield and build Guardian Helmet earlier to maximize HP scaling on So-Called Teamwork and Detona's Welcome. Boosting extra HP earlier increases your True Damage output from Thunder Belt and keeps your health bar full, allowing non-stop aggression around the Turtle and Lord objectives without returning to base.

Item recommendations come from the game's own hero data. The explanations are AI-generated from Barats's ability kit and the items' in-game passives, and are checked automatically against the item list — they never introduce an item the game does not recommend for this hero.
