How to itemise Akai and, more importantly, why each item earns its slot.

Overview

Why this build works on Akai

Akai thrives on disruption and health scaling. His passive, Tai Chi, generates a shield based on his total health whenever he casts a skill, while Body Slam also gains extra damage from his maximum health. Consequently, Akai needs maximum health and durability to maximize his shielding and damage output while executing his signature crowd control sequence. Heavy Spin forces Akai into the heart of the enemy team for extended durations, making him vulnerable to concentrated enemy fire. This build prioritizes early initiation tools and health-centric defensive items, ensuring Akai can safely charge in with Headbutt, trap priority targets against walls with Heavy Spin, and continuously sustain through his passive shields.

Item by item

Warrior Boots - Conceal

Early

Warrior Boots - Conceal grants Akai early physical protection and the Conceal active ability. This allows him to quietly approach enemies before lunging with Headbutt to knock targets airborne. Initiating unseen guarantees cleaner setups for Heavy Spin without giving opponents time to react. The movement boost also helps Akai position himself quickly to pin enemies against terrain or towards allies.

In-game passive Active Skill - Conceal: Success

Dominance Ice is essential for crippling enemy physical damage dealers who try to trade hits with Akai. Its Arctic Cold passive reduces the attack speed of nearby foes, neutralizing physical threats while Akai sticks to them with Body Slam. Since Heavy Spin requires Akai to stay right next to enemy heroes for several seconds, this aura continuously weakens enemy physical attackers throughout the entire duration of his spin.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Arctic Cold: Reduces the Attack Speed of nearby enemy heroes to 70% of normal.

Oracle

Core

Oracle directly enhances Akai's core defensive mechanic by boosting all received shield and health regeneration effects through its Bless passive. Every time Akai casts Headbutt or Body Slam, the shield generated by his Tai Chi passive becomes significantly stronger. This amplified shielding allows Akai to absorb massive amounts of damage during lengthy skirmishes, ensuring he survives while steering enemies across the battlefield with Heavy Spin.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Bless: Received Shield and HP Regen effects are increased by 30%.

Guardian Helmet provides a massive injection of maximum health, which scales directly with Akai's kit. Increasing maximum health directly strengthens the shield from Tai Chi and boosts the damage output of Body Slam. Furthermore, its Recovery passive steadily regenerates Akai's health out of combat, enabling him to quickly recover after deep dives without returning to base, keeping constant pressure on objectives like Turtle and Lord.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Recovery: Regenerates 2.5% Max HP per second (reduced to 0.5% Max HP per second over 5s after taking damage).

Athena's Shield

Situational

Athena's Shield protects Akai against heavy burst mages who attempt to obliterate him upon initiation. Its unique passive grants substantial Magic Damage Reduction instantly upon taking magic damage. When Akai charges into the enemy backline using Headbutt to start Heavy Spin, this damage reduction prevents him from being melted by high burst magic skills before he can finish isolating high-priority enemy targets.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Shield: Upon taking Magic Damage, gains 25% Magic Damage Reduction for 3s (applied before taking damage). Regains this effect 5s after leaving combat.

Immortality serves as Akai's ultimate safety net in late-game team fights. The Immortal passive revives Akai shortly after taking lethal damage, giving him a second chance with extra health and a temporary shield. Since Akai is often the primary initiator diving headfirst with Headbutt and Heavy Spin, having a revive guarantees he can absorb ultimate abilities, force enemy cooldowns, and continue disrupting foes even after dying.

In-game passive Unique Passive - Immortal: Revives 2.5s after death, gaining 16% Max HP and a 220-1200 shield (scales with level) that lasts 3s (210s cooldown).

Adapting the build

No build survives every draft. These are the situations where the order above should change.

Against heavy magic burst compositions

Prioritize purchasing Athena's Shield immediately after Dominance Ice or Oracle. This ensures Akai gains critical magic damage reduction before mid-game team fights erupt, allowing him to initiate with Headbutt without being disintegrated by enemy mages before setting up Heavy Spin.

When facing heavy physical attack speed reliant enemies

Rush Dominance Ice immediately after completing Warrior Boots - Conceal. Reducing the attack speed of nearby physical attackers severely cuts their damage output early on, making Akai much tankier when sticking to targets with Body Slam and locking them down during Heavy Spin.

When sustained map presence and constant objective control are required

Build Guardian Helmet right after your initial physical defense item. The massive boost to total health immediately empowers Akai's Tai Chi shield and Body Slam damage, while the out-of-combat regeneration lets him continually contest Turtle and Lord without retreating to base.
